Twitter is buying Vancouver-based social news aggregator Summify for an undisclosed amount in the firm's latest effort to manage the vast streams of data being funnelled across its microblogging platform on a daily basis. The Canadian startup's technology aims to filter out the most relevant news stories in users' Facebook and Twitter streams, consolidating updates, posts and shared content into neatly-packaged hourly updates. Summify's team will join Twitter's ranks under the deal, exploring ways to help users "connect and engage with relevant, timely news", Twitter tells VentureBeat. The acquisition comes as Twitter strengthens its position in the social media market, with the firm on course to reach half a billion users in February.
