Apple is lifting the lid on a new digital textbook publishing service for the iPad, called 'iBooks 2', that it claims "no printed textbook will be able to compete with". At a special event in New York, Apple says it is joining forcing with three of the largest textbook publishers in the US, Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which account for 90% of all educational texts sold in the region. While some analysts believe uptake may initially be hampered by iPad penetration and high upfront costs, Apple's rivals are ultimately expected to follow suit with similar services of their own, as the print publishing industry continues its transition to digital.
