Wikipedia is leading sites including Reddit, BoingBoing and Cheezburger in 'blacking out' on January 18 in a protest against the US anti-piracy bills 'Stop Online Piracy Act' (SOPA) and 'Protect IP Act' (PIPA). On average, Wikipedia sees 25m daily visitors, who on Wednesday will be confronted with information about the bills and tips for pressuring local political figures. Wikimedia, the not-for-profit that operates Wikipedia, made the 'blackout' decision following discussions and a vote among contributors. Both acts aim to halt online piracy of copyrighted content by penalising US sites that link to, host, process payments for, or host ads on foreign websites containing streaming or download links.
