The BBC is considering introducing a paid extension to its iPlayer catch-up TV and radio service. The plan would allow viewers access to thousands of hours of archived content for an additional 'pay-per-view' fee. It is one of many ideas feted in an attempt to recoup sizable iPlayer costs in the face of government funding cuts. Traditional TV watchers, who pay GBP145.50 (USD223) per year for live-view licences, may well take exception to extra charges, although the archived content is not currently available on-demand. A spokesperson tells the Guardian: "Any such ideas would need to be developed in conjunction with the industry and with rights-holders and they would certainly not lead to a two-tier licence fee." If agreed upon, the scheme would be implemented around 2016.
