Twitter says it is "concerned" that Google's move to integrate its social network, Google+, into its search function, announced this week, will make it harder to find tweets and user accounts. Twitter lawyer Alex MacGillivray described the changes, dubbed ‘search plus your world', as "a bad day for the internet". He claims that the alterations will "warp" search results by pulling up posts from friends and Google+ contacts, rather than Twitter, which is increasingly used as a source for breaking news and real time updates. Google is reacting with surprise, saying that Twitter abandoned a search deal that would allow tweets to appear in real time search last year. MacGillivray's comments raise questions about what defines the ‘relevance' of search results for consumers, as real time updates on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter become an increasingly powerful source of information.
