Twitter’s proprietary “Twimg” image-hosting service has vastly overtaken third-party image hosts such as Twitpic and Yfrog since its launch in mid-2011. Twimg now accounts for nearly two-thirds of all photos shared on the micro-blogging site. In December, Twitter users shared 58.4m photos, continuing a 421% increase in the amount of photos shared on Twitter through 2011. This outpaces an 82% year on year growth in active users, suggesting that current users are encouraged to share more photos through Twimg than third-party providers. However, growth was seen from hosting providers Lockerz (formerly Plixi) and iPhone-only mobile app, Instagram. Twimg is operated by Photobucket on behalf of Twitter, the first such partnership for the media-hosting company.
