Online viewing erodes traditional TV

Mon Jan 9 2012, 16:24 PM

Traditional TV viewing is eroding faster than expected, as consumers opt to view content online via desktops and connected devices, according to new research by Accenture. The firm’s ‘global consumer electronics products and services usage’ report, due to be fully disclosed at the Consumer Electronics Show this week, claims that the number of consumers that watch traditional broadcast and cable TV in an average week has fallen to below half, from nearly three-quarters in 2009. Additionally, the number of consumers planning to purchase a TV set during the next year has dipped below a third, down from 35% last year. The results illustrate the struggles of traditional media firms in the wake of the continuing adoption of online video-on-demand (VoD) platforms.
