Sony is reportedly considering developing an online pay-TV service to rival traditional cable companies, as it attempts to steal a march on firms such as Microsoft and Google. The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the situation, claims that the firm is attempting to negotiate with large media companies to distribute their channels via the internet to its range of connected devices, including its IPTVs, PlayStation 3 games console and recently-released tablets, the S1 and S2. The reports are leading some analysts to speculate that, if implemented, Sony could make a dent in the market, with the company having sold some 18.1m PS3s alone, compared to cable firm Comcast’s 22.4m customers.
