DISH Network considering internet TV service

Tue Nov 8 2011, 14:51 PM

US satellite provider DISH Network is in talks with media companies about potentially licensing channels for an internet-based television service, reports the New York Post. The service would allow the company to offer a relatively inexpensive package excluding sports channels, which push up the price of satellite subscriptions by insisting on inclusion in entry-level packages. “Sports programming may be 20% of the viewing on a day-to-day basis, but it may be 50% of the cost that the consumer pays,” says CEO Charlie Ergen in a recent third-quarter earnings call.
