IBM veteran Virginia Rometty has been named as the successor to the company’s current CEO, Sam Palmisano. She will take over the role in January, leaving her current position as SVP of global sales and becoming the tech giant’s first female chief executive. She will join a handful of female CEOs in the sector that includes Meg Whitman, recently selected to lead Hewlett-Packard (HP), and Ursula Burns, chief executive at Xerox since 2009.
