Tablets overtake netbooks for first time

Thu Oct 20 2011, 17:18 PM

Demand for Apple's iPad drove media tablet shipments to surpass netbooks for the first time in Q2, with 13.6m tablet shipments compared to 7.3m netbooks, according to a new report from ABI Research. With tablet shipments now nearly double that of netbooks, this marks a stark change from the previous quarter, when netbooks led by 8.4m to 6.4m. ABI claims that although consumers are not necessarily buying tablets instead of netbooks, this margin will continue widening as demand for netbooks starts to dwindle, while the tablet's popularity continues to rocket.
