UK's biggest ever spectrum auction put on hold

Tue Sep 6 2011, 10:48 AM

The UK government is delaying its multibillion pound spectrum auction until at least Q2 next year after a number of mobile carriers, including O2, threatened legal action over a regulatory document setting out terms of the sell-off. The sale is aimed at catering for the rapid growth in mobile broadband use, with the government selling airwaves as fourth generation (4G) licences to mobile operators. Telecoms watchdog Ofcom was expected to publish the terms of the auction this month, but that date has now been pushed back to November after O2 said it strongly objected to the proposed rules, meaning the auction is also delayed. "We are still aiming for the first half of next year. However, we have always maintained it is an ambitious timescale," says Ofcom.
