Google has bought another two firms, anti-piracy software firm Widevine and speech synthesis company Phonetic Arts, as it continues its acquisition spree. Google had now spent more than USD1.6bn by buying 42 companies this year, far exceeding CEO Eric Schmidt's target of making one acquistion a month. The rate of acquisitions highlights Google's strategy of buying firms in order to stay ahead of the competition and expand beyond its core web search business. Financial details of both deals were undisclosed.
