iPad not damaging netbook sales, says NPD

The early success of the iPad is not damaging netbook sales as 87% of customers are buying the device in addition to existing products rather than as a replacement for a PC device, according to new NPD Group data. The research firm claims that iPad owners "don't exhibit the same buying and ownership patterns as the typical consumer electronics customer" and that sales of the device are largely driven by buyers' enthusiasm for the product. However, NPD warns that as the iPad becomes more of a mainstream proposition, products with similar functionality such as netbooks, notebooks and e-readers will come under "increased pressure".
