SPOTLIGHT: Facebook’s privacy minefield

Facebook’s recent attempt to simplify its privacy settings is the latest in a series of moves aimed at deflecting claims that the site could violate user privacy. Facebook provoked outrage in 2007 for publishing data about what users were buying on third-party sites on their profile pages, as part of its controversial Beacon ad program. This year, it was forced to do a u-turn after it angered users by rewording its network rules to imply that they do not have control over their own data. As its user base passes the 225m mark, Facebook’s privacy headaches show no sign of relenting.
