The world’s most famous illegal file-sharing site is now owned by Swedish ad firm Global Gaming Factory X, which hopes to transform the site into a legitimate business. Established in 2003 by a Swedish anti-copyright group, the Pirate Bay grew to prominence by hosting millions of BitTorrent files, before its founders were sentenced to time in jail by a Swedish court. The site’s anti-establishment attitude was so popular in Sweden that it inspired its own political party, the Pirate Party, which went on to win a seat in the recent EU elections. But does the recent buyout spell the end for one of the web’s most popular buccaneers, or will it signal a Napster-style makeover?
