Thirteen music publishing firms are suing Microsoft, Yahoo! and Real Networks for copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that paid online music subscription services run by the three companies did not obtain the copyright licences for the musical compositions of tracks by a number of artists. The music companies are demanding the songs be taken down, and are claiming for damages – either actual damages and profits gained by the defendants, or USD150,000 for each act of copyright violation. The publishers are claiming that every time a song was streamed or downloaded, it counts as a separate act of infringement.
