The handset market contracted by 9.4% year-on-year in Q1 2009, according to Gartner, despite a 12.7% increase in smartphone sales in the quarter. It is the first time the analyst house has recorded a year-on-year drop in sales for the first quarter of the year. Gartner says retailers ran down stock during the period, compounding the effects of the recession on global demand for handsets.
