Microsoft is releasing key info on the APIs of its major software products, in a bid to encourage developers to build applications on its programmes. The software giant will also release protocols around its client and server software to make its software more compatible with rival products. Announcing the news at a conference in the US, Microsoft also pledged to stop suing open-source companies that create non-commercial versions of these protocols. It says the moves are part of a new initiative, called Open Source Interoperability, to promote more compatibility between commercial and community-based open-source technologies and Microsoft products.
