VIEWPOINT: Microsoft-Multimap deal

Thu Dec 13 2007, 17:25 PM

Microsoft's reported acquisition of UK-based online map service, Multimap for approximately USD50m is a logical move and just the latest in a series of deals in the consolidating digital mapping industry. To put this deal in a broader perspective, the Multimap deal is actually quite small, compared to say Nokia’s Navteq deal, which was worth USD8.1bn, albeit for a slightly different product set. However, regardless of the size of the Multimap deal, major technology vendors on both the hardware and software side are making large amounts of cash available for investments in online search businesses.
