ChaCha, a human-powered search engine, is receiving USD10m in a round of funding led by Morton Meyerson. Other participants in the round were existing investors Bezos Expeditions, Rod Canion, a founder of Compaq and Jack Gill. The 21st Century Technology Fund, also contributed USD2m to the funding round in the form of a grant. As a result of the investment, Morton Meyerson will join the startup's board. The Indiana-based firm plans to use the funds to help launch its web and mobile search services in early 2008. ChaCha, which is currently in beta, offers an instant search service, which is like other search engines, except the startup's search experts hand picks sites it thinks users will be interested in, and a live-guided search service, which allows web browsers to connect via an instant messaging service with an employee of ChaCha who will ask questions about the users' query in order to suggest search results. The firm, founded by CEO Scott Jones and company president Brad Bostic, plans to offer a mobile search service next year as well.
